Tech Oversight California today applauded the announcement that the California and Delaware Attorneys General have stepped in to stop OpenAI’s for-profit conversion following a letter calling on the AGs to weigh in:
“We’re grateful to Attorneys General Rob Bonta and Kathy Jennings for responding to concerns raised by AI experts, civil society leaders, and others and ensuring OpenAI remains committed to its nonprofit mission, rather than allowing it to become a for-profit company driven solely by shareholder interests and profit margins. Tech Oversight California, alongside our partners, will continue to closely monitor this situation to ensure OpenAI honors its commitments and that any changes to its nonprofit status prioritize the public interest above all,”said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project.
Last month, The Tech Oversight Project, together with legal scholars, AI luminaries, former OpenAI employees, Nobel laureates and civil society organizations, sent a letter calling on the attorneys general of California and Delaware to reject OpenAI’s attempt to restructure from its current nonprofit status to a for-profit company:
