SACRAMENTO – After the chatbot regulation bill SB 243, which Tech Oversight California supports, passed the Senate with a vote of 28-4, Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project, issued the following statement:
“While California leaders like State Senator Steve Padilla are taking the right steps to make AI chatbots safer, Congress is doing the opposite by trying to block states from protecting their own residents – all to appease tech giants that have made it clear they prefer zero oversight. It’s time for lawmakers in both Sacramento and D.C. to stop giving Big Tech the benefit of the doubt and recognize the truth: these companies consistently prioritize profits ahead of our kids, and their reckless AI chatbot rollouts are another example of the urgent need for states to act on bills like SB 243 to tackle these dangers.”
