Tech Oversight California Applauds 28 California Congressmembers for Opposing Federal Ban on State AI Laws

June 5, 2025

Tech Oversight California commended 28 members of the California congressional delegation, led by Rep. Doris Matsui, for writing to oppose the provision in the House’s recently passed tax bill that imposes a ten-year moratorium on states passing and enforcing AI laws:

“In the heart of the global tech industry, these California congressmembers should be applauded for opposing federal preemption and ensuring artificial intelligence works for the people, not for Big Tech,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project. “Lawmakers in states like California have been the vanguard of tackling the growing array of harms from Big Tech AI, and it’s critical that states retain their authority to enact policies tailored to them and their constituencies.”

It comes days after more than 260 bipartisan state legislators sent a similar letter to Congress, including California’s Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Assemblymember Maggy Krell, Senator Stephen C. Padilla, and Senator Scott Wiener.
