SACRAMENTO – Tech Oversight California, Oakland Privacy, Tech Equity, and Consumer Attorneys of California today raised the alarm after California Senators passed a bill that would allow Big Tech companies to spy on Californians’ online activities by creating a loophole in the state’s Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), jointly issuing the following statement:
“We are calling on the Assembly to protect our privacy and stop this Big Tech giveaway by strongly opposing SB 690, which threatens to fundamentally weaken California’s Invasion of Privacy Act by giving Big Tech immunity for secretly spying on Californians. These anti-surveillance protections have recently been used by the State of California in lawsuits against Facebook and Google that yielded millions in settlements for consumers — as well as ongoing litigation against Google for spying on kids in school – which is no doubt why weakening them has become a top target for the Big Tech lobby. It’s time for California lawmakers to send a clear message that they won’t allow Big Tech to write its own laws, or bow to big-money bullying any longer.”
