Advocates Call on Newsom to Cement AI Leadership by Signing LEAD for Kids Act
SACRAMENTO – Tech Oversight California today applauded California Governor Gavin Newsom for signing SB 53, the landmark AI bill the organization has supported throughout this year’s session, and calling on him to now sign AB 1064, the LEAD for Kids Act, into law:
“We applaud Governor Gavin Newsom for signing SB 53 into law and Senator Scott Weiner for his tireless work to get this bill over the finish line despite Big Tech lobbyists’ strident opposition. This is a key victory for the growing movement in California and across the country to hold Big Tech CEOs accountable for their products, apply basic guardrails to the development and deployment of AI, and protect whistleblowers’ ability to step forward when something goes wrong. It’s promising to see Governor Newsom taking a serious, thoughtful approach to AI regulation by signing this bill, and we now hope that he will tackle one of the biggest threats unregulated AI poses to Californians by signing AB 1064, the LEAD for Kids Act, into law so that young people aren’t harmed or exploited by this technology,” said Tech Oversight California executive director Sacha Haworth.
