Tech Oversight California Applauds Gov. Newsom’s Signature of AB 566

October 8, 2025

Tech Oversight California today applauded the signing of AB 566, the California Opt Me Out Act, legislation that will crack down on Big Tech’s efforts to circumvent the state’s data privacy protections by requiring browsers to offer clear, easy-to-use universal data opt-out signals:

“Californians will finally have an easy way to exercise their right to opt out of Big Tech companies sharing their information, stopping predatory data practices at the source. We applaud Assemblymember Lowenthal for his leadership on this bill, which puts power over data in the hands where it belongs: the people’s. Now, we hope Gov. Newsom will address one of the biggest emerging threats unregulated data collection poses in California by signing AB 1064, the LEAD for Kids Act, into law to prevent young people from being harmed and their data from being exploited by emerging chatbot technology,” said Tech Oversight California executive director Sacha Haworth.
