ICYMI: The Lever Exposes Big Tech’s Multi-Million-Dollar Campaign to Kill the COMPETE Act

June 30, 2026

Ahead of today’s Senate Judiciary Committee vote on the COMPETE Act (AB 1776), a new investigation from The Lever follows the money behind the Big Tech-backed campaign to kill critical anti-monopoly reform.

“Big Tech is spending millions to protect its monopolies, and now we know exactly where that money is going. The COMPETE Act would stop the biggest corporations from crushing competitors before they ever get off the ground, and the industry is doing everything it can to stop it. Today the Judiciary Committee has the opportunity to stand with Californians, not Big Tech – and Californians are watching,” said Tech Oversight California Executive Director Sacha Haworth.

The Lever’s Luke Goldstein and Freddy Brewster traced more than $6 million in industry lobbying on the bill and other matters, plus nearly $130,000 in campaign donations to the four committee members widely seen as the swing votes. The report lays out the financial ties in detail just hours before lawmakers cast their votes.
